Traditionally, Canada Day has been an occasion to celebrate the good fortune of living in Canada. Sadly, for Atlantic Canadians, this year it will be marred by the necessity to spend more to fuel our vehicles and on everyday goods.

We all want to do the right thing for our families and the environment. But the one-two punch of a hike in the Carbon Tax and now this ill-conceived, undefined cost of the impact of the Clean Fuel Regulations on consumers means we will have an even harder time doing the necessary things such as putting rapidly more expensive groceries on the table, a roof over our heads (If we can find one) and keeping our vehicles on the road so we can get to work.

We Atlantic Canadians know we must fight climate change. We know all too well the terrible effects of ever-stronger storms and now wildfires. We are all trying to do our bit. Our region is a leader in reducing carbon and increasing renewable energy and we support those continued investments.

As families, we are converting to heat pumps, raising insulation standards, and doing anything else we can to save energy and make our homes more energy efficient. But let’s be rational. Taking more money from our rapidly depleting pockets is not an encouragement but a punishment for people who need to drive to work to pay ever-rising bills.

That’s why we’re joining with the Council of Atlantic Premiers to urge the federal government to rethink implementation of the Clean Fuel Regulations and work with us to develop a plan to address the detrimental and disproportionate impacts of the new regulations on the people of our region.

We share their belief that the federal Clean Fuel Regulations unfairly affect Atlantic Canadians and we’re writing to you as a Member of Parliament because we believe that by working together, we can achieve our region and nation’s shared goals of reducing emissions and fighting climate change without making people living in Atlantic Canada pay the price.
